Steve started his professional career as the Yankees 1978 second round draft pick. He went on to lead the Florida State League and the Southern League in home runs and RBI’s and was also the MVP of both leagues in his first two professional seasons. He was called up to the Major Leagues in 1981 and hit a triple in his first major league at bat, in Yankee Stadium.

In 1984, his first year with Kansas City, he helped the Royals win their division title. The next year Steve hit a career high 36 home runs and the Royals went on to win the World Series. Steve hit .320 in that series.

After a season with the Seattle Mariners, Steve returned to the Yankees in 1989 where he spent two more years. He finished his sixteen year career with the Texas organization.
